As Seen on TV

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Well, it turns out that Em & Lo’s appearance on Oprah aired last week for a mere sixty seconds in a one-hour episode about the state of couples in America. We didn’t see it, but two of Emma’s college friends and a friend of ours in Brooklyn caught it “live.” Fortunately, we have it on Tivo.

So the producer and camera crew took hours setting up in our living room, a few hours more shooting here and on the streets of Rhinebeck Village, and edited the whole thing down to a few brief comments from the girls. That said, Em & Lo both looked fantastic and came across very well.

Oprah introduced the clip as the latest scoop from “two New York journalists who report from the front lines of fidelity.” She ended her brief intro with a hint that the show might well veer into potentially shocking/non-boring territory, switching from her serious voice into her Girlfriend accent, and saying, “Okay… just hold on to yourself!”

Here’s a transcript of the beginning of the clip:

Writers Emma Taylor and Lorelei Sharkey, better known as “Em & Lo,” are trendspotters when it comes to sex and relationships. One story they wrote for New York magazine noted a shift: They say Americans are redefining monogamy.

I’m still trying to get a clip from Tivo to laptop, but in the meantime, here’s a snapshot of the appearance, courtesy of Lorelei. (Hold on to yourself!)

Double Rainbow

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

We drove down to the city Friday afternoon, plodding through some of the most intense rain I’ve seen in a long time, accompanied by moments of less than 20-foot visibility on the roads—not the best of driving conditions. In an instant, we broke through the worst of the storm into a strange hybrid of intense sunlight and scattered drops pelting the windshield. As we came over a bridge, we saw two massive, brilliant rainbows—both complete arcs, miles across, but impossible to fully capture in their scale and intensity with Emma leaning over me to take a pic with our pocket camera at 50mph.

Music is here.

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

The single most insane thing we’ve ever taken on as a company was moving our offices and going live with our music service with Getty Images during the same 48 hours. Somehow we got it all done without anyone having a complete mental breakdown.

So after a very tight 90-day run-up, Pump Audio is now officially live with Getty Images in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, and Australia, with more countries to follow as soon as we get sales and support up and running in additional territories.

Here, at last, is our page on Getty’s site: gettyimages.com/music
Check out the Flash module on the left side; I had particular fun with that one.

Hopefully with that insanity behind us, I’ll be able to post here more often than once a decade. That’s the plan, anyway.

The Church

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

This past weekend, we moved out of the barn and down the block to the new Pump Audio office: a renovated church.

Here’s a shot from just before the move-in.
Church before

And here’s one from the day after Getty brought the crack team in to install the carpet and cubes. It was all done at pit-stop speed—power drills zipping, walls coming together in minutes.

Church After

We have about 15 people on the top floor, and are building sound-proof rooms for the 10 or so music classifiers on the ground floor. I have to say, I was apprehensive about the cubicle layout, but it’s actually pretty great.

Here’s my little alcove, which gets plenty of sunlight through the stained glass windows. A very Jennifer Beals-looking Madonna and child of undeterminate gender look on.

Jess and the artist relations team are across the aisle.

Steve—no surprise—is up on the stage. Whatever the other side of the conference call is picturing when they imagine the Pump offices, it’s not this.

So here we are with telephone service (sometimes) and Internet access (occasionally), but most of all, very happy in the new space.

This Guy, Right Here

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Nothing like making a mockery of a mockery. A guy in a hat that reads “I Love Famous People” plays Flavor Flav to an OJ defense attorney’s Chuck D. Stick with it—it’s well worth the two minutes.

Here’s the scan from last week’s appointment, wherein we found out that “it” is a she. We were surprised by how ambiguously the news was presented. The tech said something like, “I’d say it’s a pretty good possibility that we’re probably looking at a girl here.”

So, here she probably is:

They also gave us a snapshot from another angle, where all we could see were the soles of her feet. It’s hard to see exactly what’s what with these scans, but I know the Hang Ten logo when I see it.

The Big O

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

A camera crew from Oprah came by our house last week to shoot Emma and Lorelei for an upcoming episode. Em & Lo were asked for their thoughts on the state of sex in America, their commentary legitimized by the fact that both of them are currently pregnant (in America).

No news yet on when it will run, but odds point toward the next week or two. The Oprah people have already called Em & Lo’s publisher, Chronicle Books, to ask if they can show the cover of Em & Lo’s Buh Bye, which is fantastic news. I’ll post information on the air date as soon as I have it.

Now comes the race to get our TV service reconnected in time for the airing. I had a slight mishap with the weed-whacker yesterday, realizing only after a horrible “ZING” sound that our satellite cable was not in fact buried underground, but nestled in the weeds at the edge of our property. On the plus side, if I ever need to obliterate any pesky cables in the yard, I’ll know which tool to use.
